Where is your focus during class?  Where is your intent?

The best performers in CrossFit (or any activity) are those who mentally invest themselves in CrossFit.  You can physically see that investiture come over them when it comes time to train.  It is a look in their eyes, a certain aspect of their posture, an enlarging of their aura, their being.  The air seems charged, almost crackling, such is their energy.  They seem to grow right before your very eyes.  Their intent is manifest.

A dog is the perfect example of intent.  They are absolute masters of it.  One moment a dog is just a plain dog, maybe sitting, not really paying attention to anything.  Suddenly something seriously captures its attention and that dog is like a different animal.  It is focused, poised, its intent is palpable.  And, if that intent is focused on you, it is scary.  Atavistically scary.  But then, that dog can go back to being the same ol goofy dog as before.  The dog can turn its intent on and off as the situation demands.

That is how you should train.

What do you think?  How serious are you about your training?  How do you balance that seriousness with having fun in class?

I love the new site, the new logo, the great photos, and especially the time and thought that’s put into each and every one of these blogs. They get me prepped for the day, (which most days starts with my CF workout) both in motivation and spirit, as I read them with my morning coffee. Thanks for all your hard work Sam!

I second that motion! The site is looking better and better, and the blogs are great. I think I balance the seriousness of my training with fun by simply being myself. I’m such a funny guy that it comes out naturally(and so humble as well.) Then when we are actually training I think about Stallone in “Over the top” a great movie if you haven’t seen it. Anyway, when he is the average truck driver he wears his hat forward, but when it is “GO” time he turns that hat backwards and…
“What I do is I, I just try to take my hat, and I turn it around, and it’s like a switch, that goes on, and when the switch goes on, I feel like another person, I feel, I don’t know, I feel like a truck, like a machine.”
    check it out :)

My intent changes with every workout. For example with the filthy fifty the intent was to simply get through it. Christine, the intent is to run as hard and fast as possible, for thats my weakness. With lifting such as the clean I focus on generating more and more power from the hips. For me the intention is constantly changing depending on what I need to work on, or to just push through the WOD.

Dogs are lucky that way. They are hardwired to function in the moment, all that matters is now. Most people have to work at that. I think of intent as being without distraction, clear of purpose, a heightened consciousness. It’s useful to reflect on what drives one to be intent because for people it is more of a choice.

  • Daniel, Dan, Danny, Danny Boy, Big D, D, DJ, DJV, am i missing any?

I have to say the new site is frickin awesome. I might have to get that logo tattooed on my whole back.

I like the new site and logo, thanks.
Besides It’s nice to see Kirsten with perfect form getting into it.
Is there a glossary for crossfit moves somewhere so I can digest its vocabulary at my own very slow pace?
My intent: try to outsmart that dog…

The new site looks amazing! And I love love love the new logo. T-shirts, hoodies? Yes, please! Good stuff, guys.
Golden, that Stallone link put you in my top 5 favorite people today.

Great new site – Like the logo! Intent comes from within. On the days that I am going to train when I open my eyes that morning I am starting to gear up for the 9am workout-Really for me it starts that early -Intent builds. We drop the kids off at school and we drive over by 8:30am. I use the time prior to class to stretch and gear up mentally-Intent builds. It seems like alot but the workouts are always intense. Once I start the workout I relax and my intent shifts into focus (or survival). Then the fun begins intent shifts to action and the door to “present moment” opens up and I reach a pretty zen like state. Post workout I feel an amazing sense of accomplishment that keeps me coming back for more – Thanks Sam!!

Emilita, I’m in the top five only for one day? Jeez I guess Ill step my game up. I’m glad someone appreciated that movie. I thought of it immediately when I read Sam’s post, but he is very Stallone to me so I tend to “go” there after I read every post.to me so I tend to “go” there after I read every post.

Des, what is going on with you and steroids? You talk about them every other post. Is there something we should know?

    Andy, well said.

I thought it was topical given the references to Stallone and his shining praise for all supplements, performance enhancing. It takes a special individual to get caught moving HGH across international borders.

Also, it’s the only way to catch Kyle, the CrossFit Monster.
