CrossFit West trainer Ed Evans has been leading a class specifically designed for seniors.  The class, called CrossFit Boomers, meets Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays at 7AM.  Ed, a former AAU weightlifting and California State powerlifting champion, is the guest writer for today’s post.

CrossFit Boomers is designed for the baby boomer and beyond.

The class addresses balance, flexibility, agility, movement patterns, and strength.  As we age, we tend to to lose all of the attributes above, due in part to the natural process of getting older, but mainly due to the simple truth that if you don’t use it, you lose it.  Most aging symptoms are lifestyle related and can be slowed down or even reversed.  Nutrition, proper exercise, and relaxation methods can actually add quality years to one’s life.  CrossFit Boomers addresses these aging issues.

The focus of CrossFit Boomers is not a blistering Fran time, a double bodyweight deadlift, or a sky scraping box jump, but rather the continuation of healthy, independent, safe, and functional living.

Please post thoughts to Comments.

And a big congratulations to Cliff for being featured in Fortune Small Business magazine.

Ed, I think what your doing with your Boomers program is fantastic! It’s great that you are “demystfying” CrossFit and making it a reality for “everyone”..I don’t quite fall into the Boomer category (a few years off the mark), but I am, shall we say, a “mature” woman who appreciates your emphasis on functional living: I certainly don’t want to find myself bound to one of those Jazzy GT Select Powerchairs for duration of my Golden Years–God forbid!! I want to be independantly mobile, and CrossFit is certainly a means to that end. Thanks for appealing to us older folk, Ed!

Ed, I want to thank you for always having the most well thought out and clear answer to all my questions and concerns. All of the trainers do but especially Ed. It probably has something to do with that Bio background, and maybe just a little to do with the years of experience! Ed, Im tryin to get my mom in your class. she likes to think shes not full boomer status yet. ;)
Congratulations Cliff, thats quite an accomplishment!!

Aging is a degenerative disease, and like most degenerative diseases they can be reversed or definitely slow down. It seems most diseases are life style related and can be changed. Nutrition, the right type of exercise and relaxation methods can greatly correct the symptoms of aging. I will talk about each category later in another discussion. Remember, everything you do in life has a anabolic or catabolic effect.

Ed, I think you should do a post about hormones and cravings! how to beat them, how to balance them and so on and so on. I CRAVE like no other and I cant help but indulge sometimes…like the past two weeks. Im so not in the Zone.

Ed it has been so fantastic to have someone with your knowldege and passion in our CrossFit West Santa Cruz family. In fact, you were the first person to approach me about trying it out way back in August. Since then I have taken off with CrossFit while learning loads of helpfull information from you about becoming a great lifter. Thank you for that.

It’s great to know that your passion for CrossFit, Weight lifting, Health and Fitness is not just localized in the world of elite athletes. The fact that you have devoted your time to help better the lives of anyone who is willing to put in the effort (athletes, non athletes and boomers alike) speaks wonders about who you are as a person and a coach. I think I speak for everyone when I say you rock!

I have to echo everyone’s sentiments. I have trained with a lot of the top CrossFit coaches and I have had excellent teachers in other fields too, and Ed’s knowledge and ability to communicate it is top notch. It has been both a pleasure and a learning experience to work with him.
CrossFit Boomers is a fairly unique program and I highly encourage anyone, especially people who are intimidated or don’t think, for whatever reason, that they belong in a regular CF class, to take full advantage of it.
